Description
Circa 1920s, this trilogy style engagement ring is set with a wonderful natural unheated Pink Sapphire or Ruby and old-mine cut Diamonds onto a Platinum collet, and mounted on 18CT Yellow Gold shank.
The centre old-cut Pink Sapphire or Ruby radiates a vibrant pinkish-red colour, a gentle pastel shade with good saturation throughout the entire gemstone. The presence of iridescent rutile silks and crystal inclusions (only visible under a microscope) suggest that it has not been heat treated.
Rubies and Sapphires belong to the same mineral group, corundum, but they are just different in colour. Red corundum is classified as a Ruby and blue corundum is called a Sapphire.
The adjacent good quality colourless old-mine cut Diamonds are eye-clean, bright and of great presence. Assessed diamond clarity is VS and colour is I/J.
Old Cut Gemstones are well sought after, they were hand cut and unique, tend to have a higher crown, larger culet and a small table.
She is marked 18CT and PLAT, ideal as an engagement ring, perfect for stacking or worn alone. She is in excellent condition, some minor nibbles on the Ruby facets expected due to age but mostly only visible under a loupe. Currently a finger size O(UK) or 7 (US) but could be sized to fit you.
